Statistics on Dog Ownership April 27, 2004 12:37 a.m. Tuesday
Some interesting statistics from a late March issue of USA Today [via Cathie on AOL's Shih Tzu board] that I totally forgot to post back then:
- 39% of households in the US own at least one dog.
- 40.6 million households in the US own a dog. That's up from 40 million in 2000.
- The average dog owner is 46; 92% of dog owners are white and 57% are married.
- 41% of dogs sleep in their owner's bed
- 61% of the dogs owned are males
- Homes with dogs have a higher household income than the rest of the US; $41,000 v $36,000
- 39% of dog owners have children younger than 18 living at home
- More dog owners own their homes (83%) than the rest of the population. (70%)
