PETFINDER HAPPY TAIL OF THE WEEK: READY TO TAKE A CHANCE

Lynde Friedman and her daughter were on a mission to find a Boston terrier. The family's 17-year-old dachshund, Gretchen, was in failing health, and the Rhode Islanders felt a new dog would ease the inevitable transition.

"Every day we would go online and look at Petfinder to see if there were any Bostons in need of a home," Lynde says of the Internet's searchable database of more than 109,000 homeless pets. "Weeks and months would go by and only one or two would become available."

But then one day six-year-old Chance appeared on the list of adoptable animals in their area. The canine was being cared for by the Hanson, MA-based Boston Terrier Tea Party Rescue, and the Friedmans cried when reading the story of how the little guy came to be up for adoption. "He was loved by his previous owners," Lynde relates, "but they had a new baby. The baby's sounds were upsetting to Chance, and he had begun to nip at the child." The dog had also been blind since 2000. "When he would catch the Frisbee," explains Lynde, "he would shake it so violently that he eventually lost his vision."

The Friedmans contacted Boston Terrier Tea Party Rescue and applied to adopt Chance. After a representative of the group made a home visit and approved the placement, Lynde and her daughter were good to go. Next up was a trip to Massachusetts to collect their new dog.
