The Old Yellow Dog

He came up to the front of our building property
He is moving very slow on this cold winter day,
He has open sores, and hair missing all over his skinny body
He would tell me where he has been if he could just say....
"I'm cold, starving and for some reason I have no home now"
But instead he speaks volumes as he walks toward me,
Eyes dim, wearily he approaches, his tail hung low,
I offer him food and a kind word, he eats heartily....

I can't get too close so I sit still and move nice and slow.
He is a dirty big old lab mix who just needs some love,
It isn't his fault he has been on the streets so long,
I search my heart and pray for his soul to God above,
I silently curse the human who wouldn't let him belong.
As I make the call that truthfully breaks my heart,
I know it's better to get him off the mean streets of Big D,
If only someone would have loved him from the start....
But maybe since he touched my heart, he felt some love after all.....from me.
