Give a Dog A Home Happy Ending for GusFebruary 22, 2003 4:35 a.m. Friday I know I hardly ever update this thing but here's a nice story to tide you over until I do. PETFINDER HAPPY TAIL OF THE WEEK: A HOWLING SUCCESS For any group involved in pet adoption, honesty is the best policy--especially if you don't want pets returned. So the California-based Corona Animal Shelter didn't hold back anything about Gus. If you were to have read the basset hound's description on Petfinder.com, the ASPCA's online partner and searchable database of homeless pets, you'd have learned that it was difficult to take the pooch's picture because he would not stop howling. "The picture painted of him was not very positive," remembers California resident Autumn Shupe. "Everyone who walked by Gus at the shelter kept on going because of his constant howling." Poor Gus. Things weren't looking good for him. But the Shupes wanted a basset hound, and Autumn's husband, Wade, saw through the howling and wanted to give Gus a chance. The Shupes adopted the hound. "He is an extremely loving and loyal dog," Autumn reports. "We couldn't ask for a better companion who is always at our side and loves us dearly. We recently took him to a basset hound picnic, and everyone there could not believe that this dog came from a shelter." And since you were probably wondering, Gus is still howling. But, says proud and supportive mom Autumn, "He is a great dog; he just needs some fine-tuning."
